The Happy Airport Traveler (yes, talking to you)
Would you believe me if I told you that you have the power to make the airport a happier place? I know, I know. I can understand your skepticism, but it’s true!
Sadly the airport can often be filled with a heavy cloud of bad attitudes stemming from burnt-out business travelers, people rushing to flights, anger over missed connections and cancellations, etc. I often see people intensely talking on their cell phones trying to solve a crisis before going off the grid during their flight. Kids are acting out because they’re bored, and parents are exhausted from trying to entertain them. And then there’s always the crowd that’s spent too many hours bored at the bar. I know you’ve come across all these types before. And sadly, probably more!
But what if you could combat this negativity and chaos? Now no one can change the attitude and behavior of anyone else, but you can control YOUR OWN attitude and behavior. And for me, it starts with the simplest thing, and that’s arriving at the airport early. Don’t laugh – it’s true!
When you arrive early you not only have plenty of time to get all your pre-flight chores done (drop off your bag, go through security, pick-up coffee, water, magazines, cash, charge your phone, use the restroom, etc.) but you can do so calmly without sprinting through the airport in a manic fashion. Take the time to say thank you, to buy someone a coffee, to let someone in a rush go ahead of you in line, to make eye contact and say hello, etc.
Kindness is contagious. Go ahead and give it a try and see how your next trip to the airport feels
