Precious Cargo

OK, don’t judge me, because I know you have all been in this predicament before or at least “heard” of this happening to someone you know.

After an afternoon of wine tasting you get home and realize you have signed up for two wine clubs and have a case of wine in your car. And it’s 6PM and you have a raging headache. OK, now that we’ve established that familiar scenario, let’s add to it that you’re in a foreign country and you need to fly back to the US the next day. What’s a girl to do with a box of great wine, a suitcase full of luggage and a 16 hour flight in the future? This was me three years ago after a trip to Tuscany.

Solution: disposable diapers.

Here’s how…

Every major city has pharmacy and most sell packs of disposable diapers. They are the perfect solve for traveling with wine bottles, liquor or any other breakable item you need to transport in your checked luggage.

– Padded, check.
– Absorbent, check.
– Inexpensive, check.
– Recyclable, sure why not.

Here is how it’s done: lay your bottle (AKA ‘baby’) on your hotel bed. Wrap a diaper around the bottom, another around the top, and then 1-2 extra diapers around the sides for absorbency insurance. Nestle the precious cargo in the center of your luggage with clothes on top, bottom and around the bottles. When you get home your bottles should be in one piece. And if a misfortune happens and they aren’t, the diapers should absorb the majority of your Italian Chianti.

Happy wine tasting!

Full disclosure: you should research in advance of your purchase how much wine/liquor you can take through US Customs, as there is a legal limit before you have to pay duty!
